After being repeatedly told and reminded over time, directly and indirectly, what a terrible person I am by several mods and admins, I have left the chrultrabook project.
As a used-to-be Contributor (2), I do not recommend engaging in the Chrultrabook community for the following reasons (as of Early November 2024):
- The inability to ask for support - Seeking help with the project is difficult. Beginner-level questions often go unanswered on the forum, and discord support is banned by the moderators. Not even other members of the community are allowed to provide support due to the rules the moderators have in place. The discord server has no reason to exist nowadays, outside of development channels.
- The documentation isn't very technical - Any documentation beyond what to do is missing. This is due to the people with the information not wanting to take the time to write the documentation. This can be seen as a lack of transparency. I was the one who re-wrote and organized the current docs, I wrote what I knew, and asked others to fill info in. This never happened
- Hostile environment for differing opinions - Have different views than the admin? That instantly makes you a bigot and a piece of trash. Prepare to be called some really bad names, even if you do absolutely nothing! "This is a good thing that trump supporters are having a hard time dating", "this is where alt-right bigots belong {insert photo of trash can}" (Both quotes are direct statments from server admins) - different points of view instantly puts you far-right and named a terrible person. Does every Kamala voter agree with 100% of her choices?
- Inconsistent Moderation Practices - Moderators inconsistently enforce rules. Certain topics will not be pointed to the forum, even when they are not "development" related. Other moderators would rather spend their time trolling. The amount of channels in a server that doesn't offer support is likely a big reason for inconsistent practices.
- Lack of self-care among Developers - Some (not all) developers, in their dedication to the project, neglect the needed time to take a break and mentally re-charge. This often creates a toxic enviornment based off of the current mood of the Developers.
I am not saying that all of the admins/moderators do every single one of these things. I'm saying it happens enough to create a toxic and unwanted enviornment.
While I do believe there are some members with good intentions trying to positively contribute, the environment makes it difficult.
